- Roth made trike kits that included a tub and frame.
- The kit’s buyer attached an engine, forks and operating components, and painted the body.
- This trike was not a kit, but completely built by Roth.
Ed “Big Daddy” Roth began creating his VW trike fantasies in 1968 and this High Flyer was one of the early trike experiments. It is estimated that only 30 to 40 trikes were built by Roth and very few are still in existence. Roth produced an “American Beetle” trike kit that he would ship to a buyer. It included a fiberglass tub and frame, and the buyer attached an engine, forks and operating components, and painted the body. These kits were partial Roth creations; however, the High Flyer was completely built by Roth. The High Flyer was restored by Ken Mitchroney of Martinez, California. Its authenticity was verified by “Big Daddy” Roth, who was pleased with the restored trike.
Roth is famous for his unique creations, including Beatnik Bandit, Outlaw, Rat Fink and many others. The first to put designs on sweatshirts and T-shirts in the early 1950s, Roth began designing his unique vehicles in the late 1950s.
